Over the years as patients have had teeth removed, nothing was suggested as to how to preserve the bone in your jaw. The gum tissue in your mouth heals 7 times faster than the bone. So the soft tissues overtake the socket. Patients will loose up to 40-60% of their surrounding bone when a tooth is removed with no bone grafting.
There are numerous techniques and materials that are used to preserve the bone. After this procedure is accomplished we find that 80-90% of the bone can be retained. This is critical especially when an implant may be considered in the future for tooth replacement. We will always discuss the need for socket preservation when a tooth is needing to be extracted and the situation call for it.
